Welcome back, Premier League fans! Yes, we're back at another Premier League weekend after some European play in the midweek, including Arsenal's famous 3-0 win vs. Real Madrid which definitely wraps up the tie, and whose celebrations over definitely aren't premature...right?
In case you have turned your attention more to Champions League and Europa League action, and want to forget about Premier League play, you're not alone. Last weekend, not only did my beloved Reds lose for just the second time all season, my red-hot predictions form took a serious tumble. I missed that Liverpool upset prediction (I'm tempted to give myself half-credit for predicting a Fulham draw when hardly anyone else out there expected Liverpool to drop points, but I'll abstain because truth be told, even my most pessimistic self didn't expect that full capitulation at Craven Cottage), but also missed Everton's, Brentford's, and Man United's surprise draws against Arsenal, Chelsea, and Man City, respectively. That left only a correct "Aston Villa over Nottingham" pick to salvage a brutal 1/5 week for me, dropping me to 69/130 on the year. Serves me right for starting to get cocky last week.
But, the matches for this week are less than 12 hours away from kicking back off, so let's not waste any more time falling after the pride. Here are your 5 for Week 32!
Nottingham Forest vs. Everton
Nottingham Forest is so close to realizing their dreams of finishing Top 5 and reaching next year's Champions League, but they're still dangerously within striking distance by at least the four teams behind them, especially after that streak-busting loss to Aston Villa last weekend. Everton has been, overall, resurgent under David Moyes and will be a stodgy ol' test for Forest, but I think Nottingham will have just enough to pip them and get back on track at home.
The Pick: Nottingham, 1-0
Arsenal vs. Brentford
Arsenal's lackluster draw at Everton last weekend seemed to have answered any lingering questions about whether they had the stuff to push Liverpool to the brink in this title race. Yet, they actually ended up making up ground on the league leaders thanks to the Reds' loss to Fulham, and a couple days later, blew the bloody doors off of Real Madrid in the Champions League, reminding just about everyone of the true quality they are, from time to time, capable of reaching. The Premier League title still appears a pipe dream, but I doubt Brentford, who has been far more toothless on the road this season than in the friendly confines of the Gtech Community Stadium, will be too much trouble for them this week.
The Pick: Arsenal, 3-0
Chelsea vs. Ipswich Town
Ipswich, who have been out of their depth all season, have played impressively hard down the stretch, taking every match down to the wire and picking up surprise points here and there, but it's almost surely too little, too late, as they still sit 12 points behind their nearest relegation rivals Wolverhampton. Chelsea, meanwhile, keeps picking up unimpressive result after unimpressive result, especially on the road, and yet seem incapable of dropping out of the Top 4, thanks to the mediocrity of their peers. It's all on a knife's edge for them still, though, and it's worth noting that Ipswich did stun this Chelsea team just a couple months ago. Still, I expect Chelsea will do enough at home to get back on a winning course.
The Pick: Chelsea, 2-0
Liverpool vs. West Ham United
The good news for Liverpool fans is, the lead they have built at this point in the season is almost surely too big to fail, and Pep Guardiola's greatest Manchester City teams aren't breathing down their necks; they can withstand their second loss of the season without spiralling, in other words. Still, the fiasco at Fulham was the cherry on top of a stretch of bad form over the last 6 weeks that's seen them crash out of the Champions League, lose in the League Cup Final, and pick up league wins only in home-field gritty struggles against a couple of the worst sides in the country. All will be forgiven if and when Liverpool lift that trophy, of course, but team and fans alike would probably prefer to not stumble across the finish line. A very winnable stretch still awaits the Reds, who are 13 points away from glory, starting with this visit from a team they have beaten 10-1 on aggregate in their two matches against them this season. Based on current form, I can't imagine Liverpool having as easy a time on Sunday, but if they don't beat West Ham at home, maybe it really is time to start questioning whether they can actually see this thing out.
The Pick: Liverpool, 4-2
Newcastle United vs. Manchester United
Newcastle's four-match winning streak neatly coincided with further stumbles by Chelsea and Manchester City to position the Magpies neatly between them in the Top 5 race, a 3rd-5th place trio many fine people are calling 'The Blood Money Brothers.' Based on name recognition alone, a visit from Manchester United on Sunday morning should be a big one, and should threaten to derail Newcastle's late season push for Champions League Football in 2025-26. But I did say based on name recognition alone...nothing from the Man United we've seen on the field this season, even the one that drew City just last weekend, suggests they're about to take points off of a high-flying team in their own stadium.
The Pick: Newcastle, 3-1
