Premier League Predictions, Week 6

© Micah Veldkamp, 2019

Welcome back to your weekly Premier League predictions! We've got an exciting weekend on the docket, as 4 of the current Top 6 face each other. One of those four is league leaders Liverpool, and as such, the team nipping at their heels (Manchester City) will be looking to slice into their 5-point lead.

Speaking of Manchester City, yours truly started 4 for 5 on the season with these predictions. As I expected, all favored teams rolled to victory last weekend, with the notable exception of City, who were stunned by a shorthanded Norwich side. If I had to pick one prediction to be wrong on, I was delighted to miss that one, as it produced what is sure to be one of the wildest upsets of the year.

Now, the matches are less than 12 hours away from starting, so let's not waste any time basking in the glow of success. Here are your 5 for Week 6!

Leicester City vs. Tottenham

I feel like Leicester and Tottenham always play an entertaining match. And I feel like I always say that, and don't actually remember if that's true, or if I just have the 5-4 thriller in the 2018 season finale stuck in my head. Regardless, I expect this to be a good one. Leicester is coming off their first loss of the season, and Tottenham is coming off a big win, but the Foxes match up well against Spurs, and get them at home in this one.

The Pick: Draw, 2-2

Manchester City vs. Watford

An early-season loss isn't a backbreaker for any club. In fact, a loss to newly-promoted Norwich City may not even prove to be all that bad, as the Canaries look more than capable of finishing in the top half of the table this year. However, when you've set the bar as high as Man City have the last couple seasons, a sloppy, deserved loss to a shorthanded small-market team requires some real soul-searching. There hasn't been a lot of good news for City in this young season, so let me provide some: their redemption tour begins with a matchup against the last-placed team in the league.

The Pick: Manchester City, 3-0

West Ham vs. Manchester United

These two clubs come into Match 6 on the same number of points; in fact, they are two of the six clubs tied at 8 points. If you told the fanbases of each that they'd have the same amount of points at this juncture, I'd be willing to bet Hammer fans would be a lot more willing to accept that than United's supporters. Undoubtedly, with their sights on a Top 4 finish at least, Manchester United need this more. I expect that will make the difference in a match that could be very closely contested.

The Pick: Manchester United, 2-1

Arsenal vs. Aston Villa

Arsenal are one of the biggest enigmas year after year...not that I need to tell Arsenal fans that. They constantly seem to be on the verge of being a top-tier side, only to inexplicably go on a winless streak against inferior teams. The Gunners started this season brightly, only to get walloped by Liverpool, settle for a draw at home against rivals Tottenham, and most recently (and shockingly), blow a 2-goal lead against last place Watford. So, I think they will finally get their first Premier League win in a month against an Aston Villa side that have also struggled to get their wheels turning in their first season back post-promotion. But at this point, who knows?

The Pick: Arsenal, 1-0

Chelsea vs. Liverpool

No question what the most anticipated showdown of this weekend is. Around this time last year, Chelsea and Liverpool played one of the most exciting matches of the year, as Daniel Sturridge's stoppage-time worldie salvaged a draw for the Reds. Chelsea don't have Eden Hazard to pull their strings this year, and Liverpool are probably even better this season than they were in their record-setting 2018-19 season. That said, there is reason for optimism on the Blues' side. Frank Lampard's men turned in their best outing of the season last week, and have already proved their mettle against this Liverpool team in the thrilling Super Cup final. Furthermore, if there was one weakness for the Reds last year, it was road matchups against major opponents; they managed just one win against a Big 6 opponent on the road. Until we see that they've gotten over that hump this year, I'm going to assume things stay the same, and Chelsea holds at home.

The Pick: Draw, 1-1
