Premier League Predictions, Week 6

© Micah Veldkamp, 2018

After the midweek excitement of Champions League action and the late-week "eh" of Europa League action, it's time to turn the focus back to the Premier League. Last week, I dropped off slightly, going just 3 for 5. I did not foresee Liverpool beating Tottenham, and really thought Newcastle would snag points off of Arsenal. Wrong on both counts, but to slightly make amends for it, I did nail the Chelsea and Manchester United scorelines. Thank you, thank you. I accept your praise. By my count, I am now 11.5 for 15.

Now, the matches are less than 12 hours away from starting, so let's not waste any time. Here are your 5 for Week 6!

Liverpool vs. Southampton

The still unbeaten Reds look to make it 6 wins from 6 in what is, in theory, one of their easiest matchups of the season so far. Southampton are marginally better than West Ham, especially with the form of Liverpool loanee Danny Ings, but that's about it in contrast to Liverpool's other previous opponents. It wouldn't be the craziest thing to see Southampton steal a point in what is surely a "trap game" scenario, but I'll guess the Reds grind another one out, but not before once again making proceedings more interesting than they needed to be.

The Pick: Liverpool, 2-1

Manchester United vs. Wolverhampton

Is it safe to say United is officially back on track? After the dreadful losses to Brighton and Tottenham in consecutive weeks had everyone calling for Mourinho's head, Man U has responded nicely, with a solid win over Burnley and last week, a victory over previously-unbeaten Watford. Wolves, though, have been a revelation in this young Premier League season. They're not just getting surprising results against sides, they're playing some really good football. Good enough, dare I say, to get a point at Old Trafford?

The Pick: Draw, 2-2

Brighton & Hove Albion vs. Tottenham

For a minute there, Brighton was the trendy underdog, after pouncing on Manchester United and taking Liverpool to the final whistle in consecutive weeks. Their star has been eclipsed a bit by Watford and Wolves, but they could still prove a difficult task for a struggling Tottenham team, who is in desperate need of a good result. Spurs have lost 3 consecutive matches, their most recent effort a midweek capitulation in the Champions League against Inter Milan. I don't see Tottenham dropping yet another "must-win" situation, tough as Brighton may be; if they do, Pochettino has some serious work to do to bring hope to the North London club.

The Pick: Tottenham, 3-1

West Ham vs. Chelsea

Another week, another London derby, and though this one brings together two sides with plenty of history, the 2018 edition pits the #1 side in the Premier League against one of the worst. Chelsea's early rise to the top of the League has come on the back of 5 wins from 5, and goals galore, thanks largely to Eden Hazard's wizardry. West Ham could not have asked for a worse start to the season, losing in Weeks 1-4. BUT, the Hammers scored a major upset victory last week away at Everton; is it a sign of a much-needed turnaround, or more an indication of how much trouble Everton are in? For the time being, I'll say the latter.

The Pick: Chelsea, 4-2

Arsenal vs. Everton

On paper, this should be a very entertaining affair, and it often is. Yet, Arsenal has been almost completely clubum incogitum this season, drowned out by the Liverpool and Manchester-dominated headlines, and Everton have been, to put it blunty, a bit of a mess. Whereas Arsenal have started to forge somewhat of an identity and look to be molding into a more cohesive unit, the Toffees have not really seemed to find consistent footing at all this season, and by Week 6, that's troubling. Don't expect it to get much better in the Emirates, either.

The Pick: Arsenal, 2-1
