The Year So Far: 10 Best Movies

In 2018, the year of our Lord, we have been radically blessed by the first half of the year. I understand we’re in August which isn’t exactly halfway through the year....but I don’t care. In no particular order, here are the best movies so from from the first EIGHT months of the year. And please enjoy these tweets as much as I did:
Game Night
The only way to truly enjoy this quirky comedy is to know nothing about it. I saw a tweet saying it was way funnier than anticipated, so naturally I convinced my Dad to go with me. Empty theater on a weeknight....yet my Dad and I were laughing our heads off. The absurdity of the plot and the physical comedy were outstanding. The gag that goes on JUST too long is my kind of humor. Yeah, ok, we get it. You’re dry heaving, funny. Wait, why is it still going. Okay, you’re done. Wait you’re not? Why am I still laughing, how is this getting funnier instead of getting old? Comedies are often hard to make. The funny bits are in the trailer or it’s impossible to laugh out loud if you’re not in a packed theater. Somehow, not Game Night. Part adventure, part romance, all comedy.

Love, Simon
For all of us that hadn’t read Love, Simon, I feel like we were just thrown into the sleeper hit of the year. If you’ve seen it, you undoubtedly lived, laughed, and cried before it was over. When people talk about Love, Simon you’ll have nothing but faint and positive memories but don’t quite remember why. That’s fine.

A Quiet Place
Boy howdy did a few huge plot holes almost ruin this movie for me. I don’t think it will stay on the list at the end of the year but the novelty and originality of A Quiet Place is still worthy of recognition.

Lean on Pete
I guess I like horse movies. Who knew. A hauntingly beautiful telling of a boy and his horse, a stunning landscape and three act play. A24 strikes again.

Tully
Charlize Theron is a legend. Please watch this, and then let’s talk about how to love and support moms after they have kids! Diablo Cody hits another home run. (Also the END!)

The Rider
It’s just embarrassing at this point, I love another horse movie? The Rider is unique because real life non-actors, play fictionalized versions of themselves.

First Reformed
Here we have it folks! The most terrifying movie of the bunch. Currently my favorite of 2018. It’s a combination of: every class you might have taken at Calvin College, the Twilight Zone, and the problems America has with the Church. I read that Paul Schrader did no research for the film. #iconic

Sorry to Bother You
Just. Trust. Me. Watch. This. Movie. Don’t. Read. Any. Think. Pieces.

Mama Mia 2: Here We Go Again
Andy Garcia is in his prime. Two huge movies this year, a heartthrob in both. Tell me you didn’t smile the whole time and want to marry Lily James. Honestly, she's in the role she was born to play.

Eighth Grade

I think my tweet is good. And I think Eighth Grade is great.
