College Basketball Couch Power 10 (Feb. 6th)
St. John's is not going to sniff the Power 10 this year....which makes their win over Duke even sweeter.
Welcome back to the College Basketball Power Rankings. We've mentioned every week that this season has been kind of crazy, right? Right. So, in keeping with the theme, we saw another wild week last week, with 3 different Top 10 teams losing, and 11 total ranked teams drop a decision.
There is a clear Top 2 separating themselves from the rest of the field right now, but otherwise, it's a total free-for-all, as evidenced by yet another wild upset. Indeed, preseason favorites Duke fell again, this time in shocking fashion to a sub-500 St. John's team that was winless in the Big East. There is serious trouble brewing in Durham, no doubt. Not that my preferred Tobacco Road side has any stones to throw: it took a win over a horrible Pittsburgh team for the Tar Heels to snap a 3-game skid.
Anyways, here's my increasingly futile attempt at a Top 10:
1. Villanova (22-1)
Do I technically think Virginia is the better team to date? Yes. Is it close enough to put Villanova first without looking like a fool? Am I just putting them #1 because they're from Philadelphia, who did the nation a service and beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl? Absolutely.
2. Virginia (22-1)
See above. Another routine week of low-scoring dominant performances for the stifling Cavs.
3. Purdue (23-2)
The Boilermakers' conference isn't doing it any favors in terms of schedule strength, but there's no denying the impressiveness of Purdue's 19-game streak. They appear to have a top seed, if not THE seed, locked up.
4. Xavier (22-3)
I've been, as the youths say, sleepin' on Xavier until now. I'm starting to get sold on the Musketeers, though...at least as sold as one can be in a year like this. They're on a roll right now, with one of the best prolific offenses in the country. And, at the time of this writing, they just eked out an overtime victory in Hinkle Fieldhouse, the one place where Villanova has lost this year.
5. Michigan State (22-3)
Fun fact: I got to see MSU play up close and personal this past weekend! Shout out to my awesome girlfriend and her awesome family for awesome Assembly Hall tickets. Less fun fact: I'm really not impressed with the Spartans yet. For all the talent, height and experience they have, they just haven't put it all together yet. Too many mental errors still plague this team. That said, a 6-game streak this season is enough to keep bumping you up the rankings.
6. Auburn (21-2)
Here's where the ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ portion of the rankings start for me. So I'll give Auburn their due. The Tigers don't have a tremendous strength of schedule, but they're the SEC leaders in the clubhouse and have won 19 of their last 20.
7. Cincinnati (22-2)
Similar to the above, the Bearcats are their conference leader, and have won 15 in a row. However, their strength of schedule (and thus, strength of record) isn't quite as noteworthy as Auburn's.
8. Texas Tech (19-4)
Somehow, the Red Raiders are once again leading the Big 12. Well, actually it's not a mystery why, it's because Kansas keeps losing unexpectedly. Still, applaud Texas Tech for having a semblance of consistency in what is the craziest conference in the craziest season.
9. Clemson (19-4)
The more I look at Clemson's body of work, the more stunned I am that they're not in the Top 10 yet. Only 4 losses, with the 14th hardest schedule in the country? Wins over Ohio State, Florida, Miami and UNC? They're not a phony...this year at least.
10. Tennessee (18-5)
Similar situation as Clemson: they haven't really notched a primetime win, I suppose, but with the 5th hardest schedule in the land, 5 losses is nothing to sneeze at. Right as I write this, they're winning in Rupp Arena, sweeping Kentucky for the first time since 1999. Pay attention to these Vols, now, y'hear?
Just missed: Duke, Kansas, Rhode Island, Ohio State, St. Mary's, Cam Johnson's suddenly torrid form
