Premier League Predictions, Week 25
© Micah Veldkamp, 2019
Welcome back to another Premier League weekend! The Champions League madness was a nice distraction from the negative (in the eyes of this dismayed Red fan) trajectory of this Premier League. Indeed, we have less than 10 matches to play in the season and as I feared, Manchester City officially jumped Liverpool in the table for the first time since early December.
The one positive takeaway from last week's developments was that I did in fact predict that result correctly, and overall, scored a 4 for 5 on the week. My one shortfall was not predicting the draw in the North London Derby; but of course, the one time I give Tottenham the benefit of the doubt they let me down. Cool, guys. No matter: that brings my record to a round 72 for 100. Now, the games are less than 12 hours away from kicking off, so let's not waste any more time groveling. Here are your 5 for Week 25!
Southampton vs. Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham looks to snap a 3-match winless stretch, and the opponent this time does not exactly inspire the fear that Arsenal and Chelsea might have. Still, it may not be the easiest thing to walk into a road environment against a team desperate for a win to create some breathing space from the relegation zone. I expect Spurs to win, but it won't be easy as some might think.
The Pick: Tottenham, 2-0
Manchester City vs. Watford
City play their first match in over 2 months as bonafide league leaders, and it's an intriguing opponent on the docket. Watford has spent much of the season flirting with the Top 6, and being a thorn in major clubs' side. However, the last time we saw them against a Big 6 opponent was a week and a half ago, wherein they were ripped to shreds 5-0 by Liverpool. That, and the fact that Man City look like they're probably just not going to let this league lead go, will probably make for a long day for the Hornets.
The Pick: Manchester City, 4-1
Liverpool vs. Burnley
Liverpool has lost the lead. Now what? Well, the Reds are still just a point back and need to gather themselves against Burnley, a team that has been a bit of a bogey side in the past. The last time these sides faced, the Reds had to rally from behind in a win that spring-launched a run of the best form we've seen in the Premier League. Can that happen again? I think Liverpool gets the win, but I fear the magic of that December form is gone.
The Pick: Liverpool, 1-0
Chelsea vs. Wolverhampton
Chelsea has quietly been playing well since their humiliation at the hands of Man City; their lone loss since has come at the hands of the same team in the League Cup Final, and that was in penalties. They have a game in hand, but do still find themselves in need of a win to jump Arsenal and Manchester United back into the Top 4. Wolverhampton have been a tough out for nearly every team in the league this year, including the current leaders. It will likely be a thrilling match, but the Blues seem to be playing with renewed energy ever since rumors of Sarri's exit began swirling; I'd expect them to pull this one out.
The Pick: Chelsea, 2-1
Arsenal vs. Manchester United
Just a couple months ago, nobody could have foreseen what a crucial match this would be for Top 4 stability. But, thanks to Arsenal's consistent stretch (coinciding with wild inconsistencies from fellow Londoners, Chelsea and Tottenham), and Manchester United's renewed belief under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, this has the makings of a thriller. Both teams are currently playing with key injuries, copious attacking flair, and leaky defense. Both teams need 3 points to help stave off Chelsea for 4th place. It's got all the ingredients for a wild affair. At the end of the day, I am going to predict Arsenal to win at home and end Solskjaer's unbeaten run in the Premier League. Gunners > Gunnar.
The Pick: Arsenal, 3-2
